COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Saint Francis of Assisi Kitchen held a volunteer appreciation lunch on Sunday in Scranton, serving nearly 90 volunteers a buffet and hot meal. Volunteers helped serve over 100,000 meals this year + gift bags were given after the lunch.  PA Homepage
  • Friends of Nay Aug Park held a fundraiser on Sunday in Lackawanna County—raising funds to improve and maintain Nay Aug Park for future generations—and local sponsors provided food trucks, vendors and painting events for children.  WNEP
  • Hundreds gathered on Sunday in Scranton to support Sgt. Paul Welby, a local man fighting esophageal cancer that is believed to be linked to burn pit exposure during his service in Afghanistan. Family, friends and service members held an event with raffle baskets, a silent auction and a 50-50 drawing—helping raise funds for his treatment.  WNEP
  • Earlier today, LCBC Clark Summit hosted its fourth trunk or treat event at Abington Heights High School + the event featured over 30 decorated trunks with organizers hoping to surpass last year's turnout of over 600 kids.  FOX 56
  • Last Sunday, PAWsitively For the Animals hosted the 7th annual Howl-O-Ween Pet Parade at McDade Park in Scranton to raise funds for keeping pets with their families. Thirty-five costumed pets participated, and local sponsors Dave and Gail Lukiewiski matched donations up to $10,000 plus awards were presented, including a $100 gift certificate for a basset hound named Scout.  PA Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WVIA's Lydia McFarlane and Sarah Hofius Hall said that cell phone bans in area schools helped bring a livelier feel to hallways and cafeterias as school leaders noted more focus among students. The discussion aired on WVIA Radio today.  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials announced that Pennsylvania will pause SNAP benefits for November because a government budget impasse means there will not be enough funds—2,000,000 people relying on the program may face hardships. Congressman Dan Meuser mentioned a letter sent on October 10 and Governor Josh Shapiro urged Congress to act while the USDA works on a backup plan.  PA Homepage

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michele's Ladies in Pink held a fundraising event at Fiorelli Family Catering Center on Main St. in Lackawanna County and surprised 6 women battling cancer with checks to ease treatment costs. The group, now in its 18th year, honors its late founder by helping women face the financial burden of breast cancer.  WNEP
