COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers at CEO Weinberg Regional Food Bank in Jenkins Township are nearly reaching a goal of 20,000 Thanksgiving boxes to help families facing food insecurity if SNAP benefits fall short in the four counties served. Registration to receive a box is open until Friday (visit the Commission on Economic Opportunity website or call 570-826-0510).  PA Homepage
  • The Greater Scranton YMCA held its trunk or treat event at its headquarters in Dunmore where kids safely collected candy ahead of Halloween + thirty vehicles participated and local businesses supported the gathering.  WNEP
  • Griffin Pond Animal Shelter in South Abington Township is facing overcrowding after rescuing over 130 cats from an extreme hoarding case—over 40 cats remain and the shelter is waiving fees for barn cat adoptions to help find them new homes.  FOX 56

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school students from area schools attended the Community Giving Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy program at the Berwick YMCA to learn about nonprofit grant-making and community needs. The program, which has run for over 20 years (and now includes more schools), taught the students leadership and skills in giving back that might shape their future careers.  WNEP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • LIHEAP, which helps more than 300,000 families, will be delayed until December 3 because the program did not receive federal funds from the shutdown (applications already received will be processed once funding is restored), the Department of Human Services said.  WNEP

HEALTH NEWS

  • During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Geisinger radiologist Dr. Raymond Rubner urged both women and men to perform self-exams and get routine mammograms, stressing early detection makes treatment more successful — he emphasized that noticing new lumps quickly can save lives.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • Elk Lake runners led by Kendyl Wiesgold and Kendall Jones won the boys' A and girls' A races at the District II Cross-Country Championships+ Jones recorded a time of 15:26.07 that earned his team a state meet slot on Saturday Nov. 1+ Valley View's junior Sadie Loftus won district gold in the girls' 2A race while teams from Riverside, Mid Valley, and Lake-Lehman also qualified.  WNEP
  • 28/22 Sports Night will preview the Steelers versus Packers game and NBC’s opening night of basketball with local anchors and reporters discussing key matchups, including a possible rare moment where Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers may face his former team for the first and last time. The show airs Monday-Friday from 8 to 9 p.m.  PA Homepage
  • Scranton viewers can watch 28/22 Sports Night every Monday to Friday from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The show, hosted by Nick Zelaya, Alaina Losito, and Ricky Turner, talks about Week 9 of high school football, college games and changes with teams like the Eagles—featuring local players, coaches and sports writers.  PA Homepage
