EDUCATION NEWS

  • One hundred fifty teens gathered at an Old Forge youth leadership summit held Tuesday to discuss mental health and support each other through clubs in 25 NEIU schools—students shared ideas in dance performances, breakout sessions, and donation drives for a local center serving 200 homeless people daily. • Students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre are worried about a planned campus closure as enrollment has dropped 40% over the past decade, leaving around 300 students while University Park moves ahead with a $700 million stadium renovation and a near 50% pay raise for its president (a move many say ignores the needs of the local campus). Officials said they are working with local, state, and federal partners to decide how best to use the property in the coming years.  WNEP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown has delayed LIHEAP, the program that helps low-income families pay their heating bills with grants from $200 to $1,000, until at least December 3, leaving over 300,000 families unsure how they will heat their homes this winter. The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services said the program will not open until federal funding is released.  FOX 56
