COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Pittston’s Annual Halloweentown — expected to draw thousands of trick-or-treaters and feature creative displays at around 150 homes — is set for Friday as police will close several streets from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and advise visitors from Scranton to use alternate routes for a nearby playoff game against Scranton Prep.  PA Homepage
  • The Lackawanna County Area Agency on Aging will deliver free Thanksgiving meals to homebound residents and families on Tuesday, November 25 at 10:30 a.m. Volunteers and referrals are encouraged as the service is provided in partnership with local groups + organizations.  FOX 56
  • A group of Congolese refugees in Scranton has built a garden in South Scranton where they grow fresh food and save money. They plan to secure more land next season — this move will let them grow more produce for people in need.  WVIA
  • The City of Scranton and the Scranton Area Community Foundation have launched a month-long digital fundraiser to help people facing food insecurity as SNAP benefits will stop on November 1—donations will go directly to local groups aiding those in need. The fundraiser, which started today, runs until the end of November and urges the community to support any effort that can put food on the table.  PA Homepage

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre is hosting 'Rocky Horror Show' — a campy musical horror comedy with audience participation — today at 8 p.m. at 37 North Main St.; additional performances will be held later this weekend.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Johnson College purchased an 8700 square foot building at 814 Wyoming Ave. in downtown Scranton — the former Long Life Spring facility — to house its diesel preventative maintenance and truck technology programs, with classes set to begin in spring; the $725,000 purchase will free space at the North Main Avenue campus for future program expansion.  WVIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scranton resident Sherry Sakosky was stranded in Montego Bay when Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, hit Jamaica on Tuesday. She remains hopeful to depart Sunday after celebrating her 50th birthday with family from Clarks Summit and Meshoppen — her flight is confirmed despite the storm's impact.  WNEP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Scranton City Council approved a new downtown streetscape plan to add all-way stops, improve sidewalks and convert one-way streets to boost pedestrian safety — a $15 million project funded by state and federal grants. The changes will update several busy intersections downtown to help drivers, pedestrians and local businesses.  WVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lake Lehman beat Wyoming Area 2—1 on Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium as senior captain Olivia Oliver and junior Gianna Decesaris scored the winning goals. The Knights will advance to the PIAA 'A' State Playoffs starting Nov. 4.  WNEP
  • Valley West repeated as champions on Tuesday evening when junior forward Chelsea Hummel scored two 4th quarter goals to lead the team to a 4-1 win over Wilkes-Barre Area — earning their third straight District II '3A' title. The Spartans will advance to the PIAA '3A' State Championship — which begins Nov. 4.  WNEP
