COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Senior dog Demi is thriving at Pattie's Waggin' Tails Senior Sanctuary in Tunkhannock Township after being rescued from a New Jersey shelter and now visits a local nursing home for pet therapy—her caring caregivers plan to keep her close by so she can share love with nearby seniors in her final years.  WNEP
  • Three Wright Center employees were honored with APEX awards at a conference in Lancaster for clinical excellence and community outreach—Dr. Dempsey, Catie Nealon, and Nicole Sekelsky were recognized while the CEO joined a state board of directors. Additional local news showed a teaching hospitalist and an experienced educator joining the center and Chamber officials being promoted and selected for a fellowship, highlighting a busy week for community leaders.  The Abington Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Registration is open for the 2025 Festival of Trees run by the Lackawanna County Department of Arts and Culture to raise funds for the Toys for Tots drive; the event will show over two dozen live Christmas trees at Piazza dell’ Arte (Biden Street side of Courthouse Square) starting Dec 5 and lasting until Jan 9, with a participation fee ($25) required.  The Abington Journal
  • The Rail-Trail Council of NEPA will unveil a sculpture named Coal Pickin’ Willie P—crafted from Harley Davidson air cleaner covers, chunks of coal, railroad spikes, horseshoes and bike chains—today at the Erie Street Trailhead in Forest City. The sculpture honors the town’s founder and local coal miners and railroad workers and is one of five planned to connect the trail to Forest City.  WVIA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce and Skills in Scranton announced that the 2026 Workforce Summit (presented by Lackawanna County) will be held on March 19 at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel in Scranton to connect job seekers with local employers. The event will offer resume help, interview practice, and networking opportunities for people at all stages of their careers.  The Abington Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marywood University’s 2025 nursing graduates achieved a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX exam, far exceeding the national average and marking the third consecutive year of such success. The results underscore the program’s strong academic and clinical training—key to preparing students for a career in nursing.  The Abington Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Scranton City Council approved a $15 million downtown streetscape project by a 3—2 vote on Tuesday night to expand sidewalks, move wires underground, and replace some streetlights with stop signs to improve pedestrian safety—officials said work on blocks from Lackawanna Ave to Olive St will begin in spring and summer next year.  FOX 56
  • Lackawanna County Solicitor Paul Walker chose to donate his full salary to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital—Commissioners Brenda Sacco and Chris Chermak praised his decision as a strong act of community service.  FOX 56
  • Lackawanna County Treasurer Angela Rempe Jones is hosting a free seminar on small games of chance for nonprofits at Lackawanna College (501 Vine St., Scranton) on November 13 from (5 to 8 p.m.), featuring liquor enforcement officer Derrick Devaney. Local officials will attend to explain state law requirements and the needed documentation for legal fundraising games.  The Abington Journal

  • The Wright Center for Community Health Scranton will host a free Caregivers Resource Fair on Nov.20 from 5 to 7 p.m. (501 S. Washington Ave.) where family members and caregivers for Alzheimer’s and dementia will meet local support services and hear keynote speaker Rhonda Fallk explain how Café Connections and a regional support group work to reduce isolation.  The Abington Journal

  • High school football district playoffs started in Moosic as Abington Heights hosted Wyoming Valley West while Scranton Prep traveled to Wyoming Area and Nativity BVM faced Lackawanna Trail—each game part of the Super 16 bracket this week.  WNEP
