- ➤ Scranton's new skate park at Weston Field has drawn many skateboarders since it opened a few days ago. At Saturday’s event, local riders enjoyed food, music, and a Halloween costume contest — a win for the community after years of petitions. PA Homepage
- ➤ A community in Lackawanna County is hosting its third annual Chili and Wing Cook-Off today at Hotel Anthracite in Carbondale as a dozen local restaurants compete to raise funds for the Human Resources Foundation that helps people with disabilities. - ➤ The Scranton Area Community Foundation launched The Heart of Scranton: A Virtual Fundraiser in partnership with the City of Scranton and United Way to help local nonprofits fight food insecurity—donations will support groups serving over 33,000 residents and run through November 30. - ➤ The federal government shutdown has left SNAP benefits uncertain and many in Lackawanna County worried about getting food. Local businesses—such as Zummo’s Cafe in Scranton and Pete N’ Reenie’s Main Street Grill—are accepting donations and serving meals during regular business hours to help families in need. PA Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Scranton announced a schedule of events for November and December that includes an art exhibit running until December 12, lectures, performances, and an open house for prospective students on November 9. The events will be held at campus venues such as the Hope Horn Gallery—where the Anthracite Coal Industry exhibit is on display—and some require reservations while others are free to the public. - ➤ Marywood University representatives visited Medellín and Bogotá in Colombia to explore global programs and boost recruitment efforts. Jessica Quintana Hess held school visits and recruitment events while Dr. Chris Speicher presented at a business conference and met with partners at Universidad EAN (the university's current partner) to review program expansion ideas. - ➤ On Saturday, Luzerne County veterans attended a recognition event at Misericordia University—hosted by State Representative Jamie Walsh—to learn about community resources and listen to thank-you letters from locals. The event celebrated veterans and their families with gratitude and support. WNEP
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Gail Brenner (a board-certified audiologist and founder of the Tinnitus Treatment Center of Philadelphia) will speak to the Tinnitus Support Group at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7 at The Wright Center for Community Health Mid Valley in Jermyn (she will explain her use of FDA-approved tinnitus treatments including the Lenire Tinnitus Treatment Device). - ➤ The Wright Center for Community Health in Scranton is marking National Diabetes Month this November by offering Lifestyle Medicine services and a free 26-session Diabetes Prevention Program to help adults lower their risk. The center earned a Gold Award from the American Heart Association for improving diabetes care & works with patients to boost health through better diet, exercise, and stress relief.
