COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Valley Community Library in Peckville has partnered with local nonprofit Fruits & Roots to stock a community fridge with fresh produce and essentials—this fridge is open 24/7 while the library also runs a Seed Library to help residents learn home gardening.  PA Homepage
  • Fox56 News will update its food pantry directory — a list of food pantries, meal programs, and mobile distribution sites — to serve residents across Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties. The directory shows locations and hours so locals can quickly find food help when needed.  FOX 56
  • Geisinger has announced a $275,000 donation to food banks to help families amid the federal government shutdown. The funds will support the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (serving central, north-central and western areas) and the CEO Weinberg Food Bank, which aids communities in northeastern Pennsylvania.  FOX 56

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • AAA warned that drivers faced higher risks after Daylight Saving Time ended on Nov 2, with early darkness and glare reducing road visibility. The organization urged motorists to avoid distractions and get enough sleep—steps that research shows can cut the risk of drowsy driving—so they stay safe while on the road.  Go Lackawanna

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Scranton faculty have been in contract talks for over nine months as students look toward Thanksgiving break. The union seeks a fair contract—negotiations will continue until an agreement is reached.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richard N. Roman—longtime PennDOT official who led District 4 since 2019—died Monday. He oversaw 4,000 miles of roads and 2,100 bridges in several counties and was known for his steady service.  WVIA
  • A long government shutdown and the end of extra premium tax credits have led to a 24% rise in health insurance costs in Pennsylvania—where the average plan is set to reach about $572 a month in 2026. A self-employed local said his premium jumped from $688 to $1142 as insurers raised rates to cover future losses when healthier people drop coverage.  FOX 56
  • Officials from the Pennsylvania Game Commission warn that later in November's peak deer season, increased deer activity will raise the risk of collisions—drivers should watch for deer crossing signs and the green glow of deer eyes at dusk and dawn to stay safe.  FOX 56

  • Lackawanna College Head Football Coach Mark Duda announced he will retire at the end of the season after a 32-year career—his decision came after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He will stay on as an athletic advisor to help guide the program's future efforts.  FOX 56
