COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kara Rilstone, known as Miss Comet from Abington Heights High School, led 11 high school participants—Featured Friends—in a supply drive to collect winter items for the NEPA Youth Shelter. The drive ran from Oct. 21 to Oct. 31 with items delivered on Nov. 1 and a fundraiser scheduled for Nov. 15.  The Abington Journal
  • Girl Scout Grace Bennett of GS Troop 50797 is building a pollinator garden at Hillside Park with a book nook and two benches—she collected over 2,000 lbs of recycled plastic from local supporters to help protect pollinators. The project, approved by the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board, will see a pergola installed with Johnson Technical School’s help and will overlook Eston Wilson Lake.  The Abington Journal
  • The New Love Center Food Pantry in Avis is busier this November as the federal shutdown paused SNAP benefits and pushed a nearly 5% rise in visitors—staff said the pantry will remain open all week to support those in need.  WNEP
  • Twenty-three creative scarecrows participated in the Clarks Summit contest and drew a record 2,800 votes from local residents and visitors. The contest, hosted by the Abington Business and Professional Association, honored Northeast Title and Tag as first place, Sanderson State Street Salon as second and The Hair Shop Salon as third — reflecting the town's creative spirit.  The Abington Journal
  • Abington Community Library is hosting the 16th annual Dorothy Boccella Holiday Marketplace this weekend — on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., where free admission lets visitors shop for local holiday gifts while helping raise funds for the library through basket and brick sales.  The Abington Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • As days shorten and dusk brings deer on the road, local auto body shops in Scranton are handling more crash repairs during the deer mating season—shop owner Joseph Kelly said that advanced sensor repairs add time and cost to fixes.  PA Homepage
  • Ransom Ridge Winery and Cidery in Ransom Township pressed 18 tons of grapes in October and ferments about 2,500 gallons of juice for wines and ciders while hosting monthly tastings and offering holiday gift baskets. The winery will begin building a new facility with full food service, winery operations, and fresh produce in February—its work will be complete by September.  The Abington Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Musicians from across the community gathered at The Gathering Place in Clarks Summit for the Instrument Petting Zoo, where children & adults could try various instruments. Performers explained how instruments like the handpan drum and shakuhachi produce unique sounds.  The Abington Journal
  • Waverly Community House — known as the Comm — will host 'Harper’s Weekly War' Monday, Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. in its auditorium to showcase Civil War era Harper’s Weekly illustrations and local historical documents that explain national events and their local impact; admission is free and light refreshments will be served.  The Abington Journal

  • Early voters in Lackawanna County cast ballots on a brisk, sunny morning at Isaac Tripp Elementary in Scranton, and Mayor Paige Cognetti voted around 9 a.m. Poll workers checked in about 180 voters by 10 a.m.—they expect more people to vote after work and school end.  FOX 56
