  • Scranton first responders served as baristas at Bailey's Cafe Friday morning in downtown as part of a charity contest to raise funds for United Way. Police, firefighters and EMTs competed to earn tips—$500 was designated for a charity to support local programs.  WNEP

  • Before winter makes outdoor trips hard, local reviewers urge Scranton readers to enjoy nature through reading — recommending titles that explore local conservation, epic wilderness treks, and survival adventures — as a way to connect with the region's outdoor heritage.  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • LIHEAP, the heating assistance program for about 330,000 Pennsylvanians, is delayed by a government shutdown that pushed funding to early December—if the shutdown continues past December 3, many families will not get help with their heating bills. Governor Shapiro signed a disaster emergency declaration and officials urged residents to contact their utility companies for alternate payment options.  PA Homepage

HEALTH NEWS

  • Providence Pregnancy Center in Scranton opened a food pantry for new and expecting mothers as SNAP payments were cut amid a government shutdown nearing its 40th day—leaving many without food or formula. The center offers canned goods, baby food, and formula—while it seeks to add appliances for fresh foods and accepts volunteers and donations.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach Mark Duda announced he will retire after this season because he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (doctors say his NFL days may have played a role). He built the Lackawanna College football program over 32 years and helped more than 450 players get a second chance at life.  WVIA
  • Tomorrow evening at the Marketplace at Steamtown, wrestling star Stunt Cat will lead eight matches, a musical show, and basket raffles in a charity event called *Stunt Cat and Friends Save Christmas* that benefits United Cerebral Palsy of NEPA and honors Aiden Bartley. Doors open at 7 p.m. with matches starting at 7:30 p.m., and adult tickets cost $20 while children 12 and under pay $5.  WNEP
  • Tonight, the Super 16 Sports Final features Scranton Prep at Berwick as teams compete for the district championship — a win will help secure a spot in the state tournament next week.  WNEP
