CULTURE NEWS

  • Tony Award-winning playwright Stephen Karam’s play about a fictional Scranton family will be staged locally for the first time when it opens on Black Friday and runs through the weekend at the Scranton Shakespeare festival—bringing its global success back to its hometown.  WNEP
  • On Wednesday night, Broadway Theatre League of NEPA and Scranton Cultural Center merged to unveil the restored Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Theatre, which had been closed since June. The Cultural Center is also starting a 10 million dollar fix to keep its 1930s facility in shape — a project many years in the making, said Board President John Murray.  WNEP
  • The Youth Arts Coalition and Scranton Fringe Festival are presenting 'Hadestown: Teen Edition' at West Scranton Intermediate School on November 21 at 7 p.m. and November 22 at 2 and 7 p.m., while Wilkes-Barre’s Wolfpack Players will perform the show from today through November 23 to support free teen arts programs using our local coal history as a creative backdrop.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday the Scranton School District held its financial recovery meeting via Zoom to plan next year's school budget—focusing on updating technology with new Chromebooks and active panels in every classroom. The meeting reported a $650,000 saving from the tech department and rising enrollment of over 750 students in the cyber academy.  FOX 56

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Game Commission hosted a seminar on Chronic Wasting Disease, a fatal deer brain illness that has grown in cases since it was first detected in 2012 (Wildlife Biologist Robyn Crouthamel and Wildlife Management Supervisor Kevin Wenner explained to hunters how to safely handle deer parts to limit the disease).  FOX 56
  • Public hearings on PPL Electric’s plan to raise rates by 7% will be held next month by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission after complaints were filed, with the rate change set to take effect on Dec. 1. In-person hearings are scheduled in Scranton on Dec. 8 at 6 p.m., Catasauqua on Dec. 9 at 6 p.m., Harrisburg on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m., and Lancaster on Dec. 11—telephonic sessions will be on Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.  FOX 56
  • Geisinger is planning to expand its operations in Scranton with new inpatient beds, postpartum units and emergency treatment areas if the city council changes the zoning ordinance. Some residents have mixed views—Mayor Cognetti said she will propose the ordinance changes this week.  PA Homepage

  • On November 16th, the University of Scranton women’s basketball team upset Division I Pitt 69-63 at Pitt’s arena, defying a .1% chance given by ESPN. The victory drew national media attention and boosted online traffic by 248% — a sign of the Royals’ growing prominence as they prepare for Landmark Conference play.  WVIA
