  • At Sabatini’s Bar and Bottle Shop in Exeter, dozens of local snack lovers took part in the Middleswarth Potato Chip Eating Contest held annually after Thanksgiving, where Tristan Fry won his fourth title by eating 16.15 ounces of chips in five minutes—cheered on by local fans. Founder Albert Martino and podcast host Brian DiMattia said the event has become a family affair that showcases Northeast Pennsylvania's unique food culture.  WVIA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A local grocery store in Lackawanna County sold a match 6 Pennsylvania Lottery ticket valued at $1.17 million. Lottery officials announced the sale and confirmed that the ticket gives one customer a chance to win the jackpot.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • For more than 20 years, Matt and Jeff Harhut have transformed the Peckville Christmas House into a dazzling holiday display that started on November 27 and will run through Russian Christmas on January 7 — inviting visitors to drive or walk the bright trail.  FOX 56
  • NPR launched its Books We Love list last week with 384 books, and local professor Laurence Roth of Susquehanna University was honored when his memoir Unpacking My Father's Bookstore was included—he said the honor spotlights the vital role of independent bookstores. The recognition has prompted Roth to hope more readers visit local shops to celebrate their community history.  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Waverly Township granted a zoning permit on Nov. 24 to the Chabad of the Abingtons to build 12 cabins on Rabbi Benny Rapoport's 21-acre property for religious retreats—planning approval from the township commission is still needed before construction can begin. Some residents raised concerns about potential changes to the rural character during previous hearings.  WVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Toyota of Scranton is hosting a blood drive today in honor of Giving Tuesday—raising money and boosting blood donations for two employees’ family members. A new state fund for neurodegenerative disease research led by a Lackawanna County lawmaker—and a Luzerne County nonprofit serving soup to older adults and disadvantaged residents provide further local support.  WVIA
