COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wilkes University athletes delivered gifts to over 400 students at Dr. David W. Kistler Elementary School in Wilkes-Barre on Thursday (partnering with local teams) to share early Christmas cheer with the community.  WVIA
  • The Scranton Area Community Foundation held its annual Community Celebration today at its new home on Jefferson Avenue to honor individuals and groups that have helped strengthen local food pantries and shelters. Leaders outlined plans to boost partnerships and expand community programs in the coming year.  FOX 56
  • The Cypress House Bakery training program at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church will help formerly incarcerated residents learn baking and kitchen management skills starting in January. A community open house is held today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a tour of the renovated kitchen + meeting criminal justice expert.  WVIA
  • The Community Intervention Center is ready for a cold stretch as a Code Blue Alert pushes demand for safe shelter and warm meals today. Staff urge donations of warm-weather gear (such as coats and scarves) to support nearly 120 daily visitors.  WNEP
  • Presence from Prison, a Scranton nonprofit, is delivering holiday gifts to children of incarcerated parents by partnering with Lackawanna County Prison to offer hope and connection. The initiative relies on community donations to ensure kids feel valued during the season.  FOX 56

CULTURE NEWS

  • Holiday light displays are brightening Northeast and Central Pennsylvania this season — including Scranton's Holiday Light Spectacular at Nay Aug Park, which features over 100 light fixtures and a replica of the Electric City sign. Other local events offer family-friendly illuminations with special promotions and festive treats.  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Lackawanna County announced that Weston Field House on Providence Road will open at 7:30 p.m. tonight as a Code Blue shelter for up to 50 residents amid dangerously low temperatures and continuing alerts through Monday morning (Dec. 8). Additional shelters are available citywide.  FOX 56
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Health announced on Thursday that $6 million will go to local EMS agencies through 13 regional EMS councils to support training, recruitment and equipment upgrades. The funds come from the 2025-26 state budget passed last November.  WNEP
  • PennDOT warns drivers to prepare for fast-moving snow squalls expected today in central and northeastern areas; motorists should reduce speed, maintain following distance, and use lights when visibility drops. Officials recommend delaying travel to avoid hazards from sudden icy conditions.  FOX 56
  • State Rep. Kyle Mullins secured $5 million in the state budget on December 4 to fund research into ALS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He was motivated by his father’s death from ALS (2022) and expects the funding to boost studies that may benefit local patients.  WVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 260,000 cases of shredded cheese have been recalled by Great Lake Cheese Co. due to possible metal contamination — the recall affects products sold at Target, Walmart and Aldi with sell-by dates from January to March 2026; consumers in Scranton should check their fridges and return affected items.  WNEP
