COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The annual Lackawanna Winter Market transforms downtown Courthouse Square into a holiday shopping village with vendors, a festival of trees benefiting Toys for Tots, and community gatherings. The market runs Saturday until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  PA Homepage
  • Both Wilkes-Barre and Scranton have new Code Blue partners for emergency shelters on cold nights — in Wilkes-Barre, Calvary Bible Church now shelters up to 70 people and Scranton’s Weston Field is managed by Catholic Social Services. Volunteers staff the sites when the National Weather Service forecasts low windchill and snowfall.  WVIA
  • The Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Office and the Wright Center for Patient and Community Engagement are hosting their third annual toy drive today at Courthouse Square in Scranton. Community members can donate toys + money while enjoying raffle baskets.  FOX 56
  • On Saturday, the Santa Train brought Santa and Mrs. Claus to Carbondale, where residents enjoyed live music and festive sights aboard the historic 1948 locomotive (one of three still in operation). The event provided a joyful start to the holiday season.  WNEP

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Celebration Station 919 is a boutique gift shop and party supply stop housed in a beautifully restored train station (a local landmark) in Old Forge. It offers gourmet dips, sweets, and locally sourced party kits for events with up to 200 guests.  WNEP
  • On Saturday, the GameStop at Viewmont Mall in Dickson City hosted a unique promotion that let gamers trade almost anything for a five-dollar credit. Customers exchanged items ranging from a magnetic Katamari to a school photo (unsold goods will be donated to local charities).  PA Homepage

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Be Like Blippi Tour is scheduled to perform at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple on May 31 at 2 p.m. Designed for kids 2–7, the live show features music, dance and interactive fun — tickets start at $41.65.  The Abington Journal
  • Broadway in Scranton will stage Champions of Magic at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Memorial Theatre in the Scranton Cultural Center on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Fourth-generation magician Liberty Larsen said some audience members may join her act during this holiday show; tickets start at $42.  The Abington Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents planning for 2026 can follow health tips from The Wright Center for Community Health, which urges small, sustainable changes like better diets, regular exercise, and improved sleep. Dr. Jumee Barooah shared practical lifestyle medicine advice to help reduce chronic illnesses.  The Abington Journal
  • Scranton’s The Wright Center will begin a $5 million expansion in the spring to add 8,000 sqft for primary, behavioral and dental care at its North Main Avenue office — the current clinic will be demolished for parking. The project will finish by fall or winter next year.  WNEP
