ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At around 2 a.m. Wednesday, Scranton and Dunmore fire departments battled a blaze at the West Side Hotel in West Scranton that displaced over 20 residents (many losing nearly all their possessions) while the Red Cross and city arranged temporary shelter at the local high school.  FOX 56

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Johnson College received a $3,000 grant from Swipe Out Hunger and The GIANT Company to boost its Refuel Station (campus food pantry) that serves students, faculty and staff. The funds will enable new shelving and a mini-refrigerator to expand food variety and enhance meal access.  FOX 56
  • On Dec. 10, the Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee advanced bipartisan legislation that would require all school districts to restrict cell phone use during the day (with exceptions for medical needs, IEPs and approved instructional use). The bill now heads to the full Senate for approval.  WVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday warned pet buyers on Wednesday about a surge in deceptive pet-sale scams, urging shoppers to verify seller credentials and avoid advance-fee payments (BBB data shows many fall victim to these scams).  FOX 56

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Today, Quandel Construction broke ground on Hilltop Heights, a 36-unit affordable housing development in South Scranton on Saginaw Street (covering seven acres with three apartment buildings and a community resource building). The 15-month project will let families reserve a unit next year.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • The PIAA approved a 35-second shot clock for all boys' and girls' varsity and junior varsity basketball games to take effect in the 2028-2029 season. Local coaches say schools must buy new equipment and train officials (which will speed up game play).  WNEP
