BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lynn Sandy’s Bakery expects to sell over 2,000 pounds of cookies next week as holiday orders surge. Customers should order by 5 p.m. today to pick up grab-and-go treats at the shop on Pittston Avenue.  WNEP
  • A $1 million Powerball ticket matching five white balls was sold at Midway Beverage in Wyoming on Wednesday, Dec. 17, netting the store a $5,000 bonus, while a ticket worth $200,000 was sold at Walmart in Beaver County and no jackpot winner appeared from the drawing.  WNEP

CULTURE NEWS

  • WVIA has launched its Good Natured podcast — featuring outdoors tips from host Haley O’Brien and guest Don Jacobs from DiscoverNEPA — that shares local feel-good stories and adventure ideas in the region.  WVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scranton School District bought the building at 1509 Maple St. on East Elm Street for $2.5 million to expand its Monticello program for young special education students. The building will open in 2026–2027 to add needed Autistic Support classrooms (it will also generate rental revenue).  FOX 56
  • Lackawanna College is building a new 17,000 sqft Center for Technology Innovation in downtown Scranton after a recent groundbreaking ceremony. The new facility will provide a dedicated space for cybersecurity training and is set to open next summer.  PA Homepage

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Shapiro announced a bonus program that will pay 55,000 childcare workers at least $450 in 2026 as the state works to fill 3,000 vacant jobs and provide care for an additional 25,000 children. The $25 million funding aims to boost recruitment and retention in the sector.  PA Homepage
  • PennDOT officials are managing tough winter conditions after local areas saw over 11 inches of December snow, well above the normal seven inches, and are preparing by adjusting anti-skid mixtures plus clearing drains for one to one and a half inches of rain tonight. Homeowners are advised to clear storm drains to prevent flooding.  WNEP
  • The Twin Bridges project in Dunmore ended five years of construction when the westbound bridge reopened Thursday afternoon ahead of schedule. The project also includes rehabilitating an abandoned railroad bridge (part of the future Lackawanna County Trail Corridor) with completion expected in summer.  PA Homepage
